IndieGasm

fun.:a double meaning

The Soma in San Diego, CA.

When I name the band “fun“, does that ring a bell? Nate Ruess sound familiar? What about The Format? OK, if that raised your brow (or even if it didn’t), you should invest some time into fun.. fun.2Nate, formerly of The Format, Jack Antonoff from Steel Train, and Andrew Dost from Anathello joined forces to release “Aim and Ignite” on August 25th of this year. What’s offered here is similar to what you heard in “Dog Problems”, the last album released by The Format. I certainly had high expectations for “Aim and Ignite” before it’s release and I’m very pleased with the turnout. The indie-pop flavor should leave you with a smile at the end of every song.

The guys have been on several tours since late 2008 promoting the group just to get their name out there, playing the few originals they had back then and covering some numbers from The Format. Tonight happened to be the last night of their tour with Dusty Rhodes and the River Band, and it ended on a good note I might add! After tonight, they’ll be taking a nice break until February when they get back on the road with Jack’s Mannequin.

Before the show, I had the honor of meeting up with Nate for an interview that I was particularly excited about. For your aural pleasure, yet again, I have recorded the interview.

I do recommend that you either go to http://www.myspace.com/fun or http://www.ournameisfun.com where you can listen to a few of the tracks off of the new album or even purchase and download the album itself.

I really must say, Nate is a super cool dude. It’s musicians like him that are so refreshing in the world of music because he is human just like you and I. Nate does exactly what makes him happy and it’s a win-win for everyone involved. Another true inspiration to all musicians out there.

Even construction workers love our show!

Hello All,

For those who tuned into IndieGasm last week, we stated that we would have a show this week for you guys. Unfortunately between finals, working, packing, and goodbyes, we three have been far too busy to get on the air and provide you with more awesome music or get new material on our site. DJ Spoff and DJ Spence $$ are driving across the country to the beautiful San Diego on Sunday the 17th of May. DJ Spoff will reside on the west coast as DJ Spence will be spending a semester in Hungary. And our wonderful DJ Christay will continue IndieGasm down its righteous path with a good friend of ours, Jason Checkla. (DJ superhero name TBD (DJ Check-it?)) So please, do not fret. IndieGasm will live on next semester with even more music while DJ Spoff and DJ Spence $$ will continue to add fine music material right here on this site. And we promise to have the Guster interview as well as Good Old War interview posted up soon for you guys. Trust us, we’re just as excited to put it up as you are to read all about it.

IndieGasm wishes everyone a safe and wonderful summer. We thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for being such great friends and supporting us. We love you all so much!!!

Hey loves,

Tell us what you think of having a Tasty Tuesday album download of the week, on Tuesday nights. I (Spencer), personally have kind of a massive music collection (among *other things wink wink lol) and would like to share that with all of you. The first thing. Not the other thing. Well, maybe the other thing.

ANYWAY!

I’m tempted to put up an indie album of the week for download. If you guys and gals simply post a comment that says, “YES! DO IT,” we’ll do it. We love sharing music with you, because sharing is caring, right? We’ll put up some of our favorites, old and new, of things you probably haven’t heard, but should listen to.

Hit us up in the comments section and let us know what you think.

*P.S. To all of you people with dirty minds, I was REFERRING to my MASSIVE, THROBBING…………heart. Have a good day.

Do Joke Bands have something against Steve?
March 7, 2009, 8:07 pm

I had a revelation last night. This may sound like a ridiculous argument, but I wholeheartedly believe that joke bands (i.e. The Lonely Island [a.k.a. Incredibad] and Flight of the Conchords) absolutely HATE a guy named Steve. I wonder what this guy did to have his name included in various songs and be hated so much by various musicians. Don’t believe me? Check out these songs.

dudes

The first one, Just 2 Guyz by The Lonely Island. Just before the one minute mark, the line is, “I like playing games in the pool / Who invited Steve? That dude’s a [bleeeeeeep].” The joke here, obviously, is that we were expecting to hear the word “fool” but instead heard a word that rhymes with “punt.” Listen for yourself.

The Lonely Island – Just 2 Guyz

The next example is Flight of the Conchords’ “Hiphopopotamus Vs. Rhymenocerous” in which Jemaine mentions, “I’m not a large water-dwelling mammal / where did you get that preposterous hypothesis? / Did Steve tell you that perchance? / Steeeeeeve.” In this song, we’re made to believe that Steve is somewhat of an idiot. Come on, seriously? Steve told you that Jemaine was a hippo? WHAT a moron. This example also shows up just before the  one-minute mark.

Flight of the Conchords - Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros

Our third, and final example (for now!) is from The Lonely Island’s (a.k.a. Incredibad’s) song, We Like Sportz. Again, right before the one minute mark, these lines are heard: “I like my friend / He’s a real guy’s guy. / He’s not a loudmouth like that [bleeeeep]hole, Steve.” Again, the bleep being a word that is used to describe the kicking of a football to the other team on a turnover on downs.

The Lonely Island - We Like Sportz

Come on guys. Where’s the love?!?

If you can find any examples of hate towards Steve in any songs, please share them with us. We want to amass a collection of Steve-hating songs. Over and out.

Tonight’s show re-cap

Hey guys, we had a ton of fun tonight. We surely hope that you had as much fun listening to the music we played as much as we liked playing it for you. Tonight we had a very special treat for those listening, Spence and Spoff playing “I Will Follow You Into The Dark” live on the air. We figured since it was a cover show, it might be nice for us to play something we love to play, for all of you. Below is the mp3 download to the live performance we did, so that if you missed it, you can replay it on your iTunes for years to come. :)

“I Will Follow You Into The Dark” by Death Cab for Cutie (Cover by DJ Spence and DJ Spoff)

We also played a pretty awesome cover of Britney Spears’ “Womanizer” and The Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights” that we’ll post here if you want them.

Otherwise, we’ll be missing having you listen in to our show for the next two weeks, because its our Spring Break next week (Spring, in the middle of winter? Psh, yeah, I don’t think so). Hope you enjoy the mp3 download and we hope you enjoyed the show tonight. Stay tuned for Wednesday’s eTrackulation.

eTrackulations and Fore-Playlists

Alright friends and lovers, here’s your chance to be a real part of this sexy community we like to call IndieGasm. From here on out, there will be two new featured sections, that YOU can help make into a wonderful new item for all to see and share. They are:

eTrackulations (Download of the Day)

and

Fore-Playlists (Playlist of the Week)

This is how it’s going to work.

eTrackulations will be sweeeeet tracks that we find on the net that we want to share with you wonderful people in our neighborhood. We will be posting them up either every day, or as often as we find them, but the deal is, no less than 4 MP3s per week. You keep coming back and listening, we’ll keep putting them up. Feel free to share your own with us as we always love hearing new music!

Fore-Playlists are going to be themed playlists once a week. This is where your input comes in! We’ll be doing themed playlists like, Songs for a Rainy Day or Covers and Covers of Covers or Sexy Explosion. We’ll put up a playlist of 10-12 songs that fit those themes, and then it’s up to you to post some of your favorite playlists. If you love our playlists, tell us, but if you dislike this feature, please let us know that too.

Stay posted for tomorrow’s eTrackulation as well as our show, at 11pm on www.wnyo.org

And here, for your viewing pleasure:
